Changes in Lifestyle: Key to Delay in Memory Loss

Forgetting where most of your items are placed? Forgot to attend an important appointment? Having trouble remembering the name of a store or a person? Many of us tend to forget things occasionally. However, sometimes it’s not too simple, so we can’t always take it lightly. When it comes to aging, our memory is also one of the affected parts and associated with illnesses like dementia. The Study of Lifestyle and Memory Loss

New research suggests that memory loss relates to a genetic variation called nutrient-sensing pathways, which states that some lifestyle changes may have to do with how aging affects memory.

Neural Stem Cells (NSCs)

One of the study’s highlights is the neural stem cells, which are defined as a group of cells found in the hippocampus, a center for memory in the brain. These cells divide to make more cells, and they are essential to maintain our memory.

These pathways respond to lifestyle factors like diet and exercise as well as support cell behavior changes. They are found to have the ability to provide a molecular connection between lifestyle and memory, which can also explain why aging affects people’s memory differently.

Nutrient-sensing Genes

Researchers highlighted specific genes involved in both nutrient sensing and memory which are called ABTBI and GRB10. These findings came from data (over 2,000 people) analyzed which included genetic information and data on their memory, eating patterns such as diet type, overall calorie intake, and physical activity levels. 

It appears that these two genes mediate the linkage between diet, aging, and memory. It could be that some people with a particular variant of GRB10 or SIRT1 could benefit memory from getting a diet, or regular exercise. 

According to Chiara de Lucia, lead author of the study and from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London: “Identifying these genes as the missing links between these three important variables could inform new approaches to help improve the aging process through targeted changes in diet and exercise and ultimately in developing new drugs,” 

A door for new solutions in aging and cognition related concerns

While this is such a promising study, there’s an acknowledgment of its limitations too. However, the birth of this study opens more doors to find recommendations on how to maintain good cognitive function even while aging. According to Dr. Sandrine Thuret, senior author of the study, the results suggest that lifestyle factors when changed may be able to delay memory decline. However, the effectiveness of this method still depends on the genetic makeup of each individual. 

Tips to Improve Your Memory

So what exactly are these lifestyle factors that we need to change for the betterment of our brain health and delay memory loss during aging?

Regular Exercise. Physical activity should always be a part of your routine. It doesn’t solely increase blood flow in your body but it also sharpens memory.

Eat a well-balanced diet. In another study, a healthy diet, particularly the Meditteranean diet helps preserve cognitive function. Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Focus also on picking more low-fat protein sources. Avoid too much alcohol when it comes to drinking habits. 

Keep an active mind. Engage in activities that make you mentally active. Such stimulating activities like crossword puzzles, taking different routes by car, or by walking, learning something new and other related activities may help in keeping your brain on the right condition.

Organize your lifestyle. The reason behind you forgetting a lot of things could be that you have a messy arrangement in your home and in the way you approach things in general. After having figured that out, try to do some proper cleaning, list down, or make digital reminders of the important things you need to do, so you will less likely forget things that way.
